ok, i think i finally understand what the times in the HUD are for...
time is displayed as "current lap time" / "fastest lap completed"
this example race has 3 laps.
HUD aka Heads Up Display

ok, as i approach the end of lap 1, i have a "current lap time", but since i have not completed the first lap yet, i do not have any time displayed yet in the "fastest lap completed" area.

i just went through the start gate to begin the 2nd lap, so my "current lap time" is moved to the "fastest lap completed" area, and the time counter is reset to zero, in my "current lap time" area.

ok, i'm approaching the end of the 2nd lap, and it looks like i have improved my lap time, woohoo!!

cool, i improved my lap time by 27 seconds from 1:29 to 1:02. so the "fastest lap completed" area now reflects my faster time, and the time counter is reset to zero again, in my "current lap time" area, as i begin the 3rd lap.

i'm now approaching the end of the 3rd lap, which is the end of the race. ntus, some trees got in my way, so my current lap time is 1:12, which is slower than my "fastest lap completed" time of 1:02. those AI's can be tricky little devils.

ok, i finished the race by going through the start gate for a 3rd time. the time counter is reset in my "current lap time" area to zero. and the "fastest lap completed" area reflects the time of 1:02, which was the 2nd lap and my fastest lap completed.

if the race ends before you have a chance to cross the finish line, you will still have time displayed in the "current lap time" area. the 2nd time area will always reflect your "fastest lap completed" time. it is this last screen shot that you should dutifully take at the end of each race, and then compare your "fastest lap completed" time to those that are listed in the stock fastest lap summary table or the ifrit fastest lap summary table or the modded fastest lap summary table, depending on the type of race you were in. if you have a fastest lap time (or if you have tied the fastest lap time) email the pic to my bro, 666, and he will check for himself, and then dutifully record your time. honor and fame will be yours!!!

hope this clears things up, so even though you might not have a first place finish, you can still go on record as having the fastest lap for a race map. so the morale of the story is to always take screen shots, and it's ok to crash and burn in pursuit of the fastest lap time. toodles, LWA-harmless.
